Welcome back this evening, as we see the outcome of this Chapter 9 of 'murders' and 'treachery' in the family of the now dead Jerubbaal [Gideon], as between his sons Abimelech and Jotham.
Thank you for returning again this evening for part 3. LET'S SEE, IF ONE CAN PROFIT THROUGH MURDER AND TREACHERY. Amen. Amen.
Judges Chapter 9 audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html Part 3 of 3 parts for May 11, 2020, due to the length.
46 'And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.
49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.'
50 'Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower. audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.'
53 'And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull.
54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
'56 'Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.' Amen. Amen.
My friends, a note of significance.
As it is written: 19'Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.” [Romans 12:19] audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
Equally important, as it is written, 'Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 'For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. 9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.' [Galatians 6:8-9] audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
Through 'Bible Literacy', we find 'nuggets of true gold' in 'Principles to Live by in Biblical Wisdom', as we found from our part one of this chapter, at 9:21 'And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.' He did not seek 'vengeance'.audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
Jesus, our Lord and Savior, was also 'humble', and, 'meek', as we learn from 1 Peter 2:19-25, to wit:
19 'For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.'
But, a word of 'caution' for us in the 21st Century, and 'choosing leaders'.
The bramble is a worthless plant, not to be numbered among the trees, useless and fruitless, hurtful and irritating, scratching and tearing, and doing damage; it began with the curse, and its end is to be burned. Abimelech was such a man, and yet he was chosen king by the trees, by all the trees; this election seems to have been more unanimous than any of the others.audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
Let us not be surprised or think it is unusual if we see craziness situated in great dignity [Ecclesiastes 10:6], and the vilest men or, women, exalted [Psalms 12:8], and men and women blind to their own interest when they choose their leaders.audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
We must be extremely careful. The bramble, after having been chosen for their leader, takes no time at all to consider whether he should accept or not, but he accepts immediately, as if he had been born and bred to rule, and then he assures them that he will be a great king. audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
Let us see consider what we learn, 'with fasting and prayer', as we are studying 'the times of the Judges', when humanity, who knew God, departed from Him, and 'did what was right in their own eyes'. [Judges 17:6]
And modernly, let us carefully consider our 'political theories'. Do we want - 'Communism'; 'Socialism'; 'Nazism' or, 'Capitalism'??? Choices we make, leads to historical repeating of - 'DEVASTATING' Consequences.
By knowing 'past history', and 'bible principles' - We are, forewarned!!!!
Therefore, as we learn, let us apply these 'principles' to our lives, when making decisions [1 Corinthians 10:11] audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html. LET US GET RIGHT WITH GOD!! Amen. Amen.
