Welcome my Friends to 'Sanctuary'. A 'room' where we are able to pull aside, away from all the 'cares of the world', for the purpose of 'focusing' on God the Father, through Jesus Christ, God the Son, as we are enabled by God the Holy Spirit. Welcome.
For a few posts, let us review and check ourselves to be sure we have 'repented', we continue to 'repent', of sins creeping into our lives, [through thoughts, leading to words and actions], from our old nature [the old man.] Or, am I too stubborn to 'repent'.
[Study Romans Chapters 7-8, for deeper understanding of this 'conflict'. audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html].
See Romans Chapter 1, on the 'progression' of 'sin'. Notice, God is not 'hurt', but, the unrepentant person is the one who is 'hurt'.
Today, Sunday, December 2, 2018, let us continue what we began on Sunday/Wednesday since November 11, 14; 18, 21, 25, 28, 2018, our study of the meaning in - The Penitential Psalms consisting of:
Psalms 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143, audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
A prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed, and poureth out his complaint before the Lord.[Comments from Matthew Henry Concise Commentary Online.]
Some think that David penned this Psalm 102 at the time of Absalom's rebellion, recorded at 2 Samuel 15.
Others attribute the psalm to have been penned by Daniel, Nehemiah, or some other prophet; being penned for the use of the church, when it was in captivity in Babylon. This is because it seems to speak of the ruin of Zion and of a time set for the rebuilding of it, which Daniel understood by books, Daniel 9:2. Or perhaps the psalmist was himself in great affliction, which he complains of in the beginning of the psalm, but (as in Psalm 77 and elsewhere) he comforts himself under it with the consideration of God's eternity, and the church's prosperity and perpetuity, how much soever it was now distressed and threatened. [See John 16:33]
From this, we can learn to do likewise.
But it is clear, from the application of verses 25, 26, to Christ (Hebrews 1:10-12), that the psalm has reference to the days of the Messiah, and speaks either of his affliction or of the afflictions of his church for his sake.
In the Psalm we have, I. A sorrowful complaint which the psalmist makes, either for himself or in the name of the church, of great afflictions, which were very pressing (verses 1-11).
II. Seasonable comfort fetched in against these grievances,
1. From the eternity of God (verses 12, 24, 27).
2. From a believing prospect of the deliverance which God would, in due time, work for his afflicted church (verses 13-22) and the continuance of it in the world (verse 28).
In singing this Psalm 102, if we have not occasion to make the same complaints, yet we may take occasion to sympathize with those that have, and then the comfortable part of this psalm will be the more comfortable to us in the singing of it.
A song of degrees. [Comments from Matthew Henry Concise Commentary Online.]
This Psalm 130 relates not to any temporal concern, either personal or public, but it is wholly taken up with the affairs of the soul. It is reckoned one of the seven penitential psalms, which have sometimes been made use of by penitents, upon their admission into the church; and, in singing it, we are all concerned to apply it to ourselves.
The psalmist here expresses,
I. His desire towards God (verses 1, 2).
II. His repentance before God (verses 3, 4).
III. His attendance upon God (verses 5, 6).
IV. His expectations from God (verses 7, 8).
And, as in water face answers to face, so does the heart of one humble penitent to another.
I pray you are appreciating the beauty and benefit of studying all of God's Word, including the Old Testament. Ah-h-h, the blessings in doing so! Amen. Amen.
