Do you, my Friend want answered prayer? Then truly study all of Psalm 51, and learn especially Psalm 51:17-19 King James Version (KJV), to wit:
'17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.' audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
Welcome my Friends to 'Sanctuary'. A 'room' where we are able to pull aside, away from all the 'cares of the world', for the purpose of 'focusing' on God the Father, through Jesus Christ, God the Son, as we are enabled by God the Holy Spirit. Welcome.
For a few posts, let us review and check ourselves to be sure we have 'repented', we continue to 'repent', of sins creeping into our lives, [through thoughts, leading to words and actions], from our old nature [the old man.]
[Study Romans Chapters 7-8, for deeper understanding of this 'conflict'. audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html].
Today, Wednesday, November 28, 2018, let us continue what we began on Sunday/Wednesday since November 11, 14; 18, 21, 25, 2018, our study of the meaning in - The Penitential Psalms
A psalm of David to bring to remembrance. [Comments from Matthew Henry Concise Commentary Online.] audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
This Psalm 38 is one of the penitential psalms; it is full of grief and complaint from the beginning to the end. David's sins and his afflictions are the cause of his grief and the matter of his complaints. It should seem he was now sick and in pain, which reminded him of his sins and helped to humble him for them; he was, at the same time, deserted by his friends and persecuted by his enemies; so that the psalm is calculated for the depth of distress and a complication of calamities. [This is - the blessedness of 'afflictions'.]
He complains, I. Of God's displeasure, and of his own sin which provoked God against him (verses 1-5). II. Of his bodily sickness (verses 6-10). III. Of the unkindness of his friends (verse 11). IV. Of the injuries which his enemies did him, pleading his good conduct towards them, yet confessing his sins against God (verses 12-20). Lastly, he concludes the psalm with earnest prayers to God for his gracious presence and help (verses 21, 22). [Notice, David is fully aware and takes responsibility for his own actions, leading to his 'conditions'. See also Hebrews 12:1-11 on the 'chastening' of the Lord of His own.]
In sincerity in singing this psalm we ought to be much affected with the malignity of sin; and, if we have not such troubles as are here described, we know not how soon we may have, and therefore must sing of them by way of preparation and we know that others have them, and therefore we must sing of the by way of sympathy.
(See 2 Samuel 11:1- 12:15 for the entire record as well as 1 King 15:5 ),
To the chief musician. A psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba.
Though David penned this psalm upon a very particular occasion, yet, it is of as general use as any of David’s psalms; it is the most eminent of the penitential psalms, and most expressive of the cares and desires of a repenting sinner. It is a pity indeed that in our devout addresses to God we should have any thing else to do than to praise God, for that is the work of heaven; but we make other work for ourselves by our own sins and follies: we must come to the throne of grace in the posture of penitents, to confess our sins and sue for the grace of God; and, if therein we would take with us words, we can nowhere find any more apposite than in this psalm, which is the record of David’s repentance for his sin in the matter of Uriah, which was the greatest blemish upon his character: all the rest of his faults were nothing to this; it is said of him (See 2 Samuel 11:1- 12:15 for the entire record as well as 1 King 15:5 ), That "he turned not aside from the commandment of the Lord all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.’’
Notice how we are to 'repent'. In this psalm, I. He confesses his sin (verses 3-6). II. He prays earnestly for the pardon of his sin (verses 1, 2, 7, 9). III. For peace of conscience (verses 8, 12). IV. For grace to go and sin no more (verses 10, 11, 14). V. For liberty of access to God (verse 15). IV. He promises to do what he could for the good of the souls of others (verse 13) and for the glory of God (verses 16, 17, 19). And, lastly, concludes with a prayer for Zion and Jerusalem (verse 18). This is truly a prayer of a man with a broken and contrite spirit, in all sincerity, for sure!
Do You, do I, have work to be about without further delay, with repenting of anything? There will be no peace of conscience, and there is nothing man nor medicine to do - for the peace of conscience. It is of God. Be not 'stubborn' unto a hardened heart.[See Romans Chapter 1] audio-bible.com/bible/bible.html
Those whose consciences charge them with any gross sin should, with a believing regard to Jesus Christ, the Mediator, again and again pray over this psalm; nay, though we have not been guilty of adultery and murder, or any the like enormous crime, yet in singing it, and praying over it, we may very sensibly apply it all to ourselves, which if we do with suitable affections we shall, through Christ, find mercy to pardon and grace for seasonable help. [Tried and continue to do so; and proven this to be true, my Friends!]
I pray you are appreciating the beauty and benefit of studying all of God's Word, including the Old Testament. Ah-h-h, the blessings in doing so! The peace in applying the principles learned in your lives. Slow down and take your time with the Holy Spirit and this Psalm. Amen. Amen.
